Who has the cheapest phone plans in Germany?

In contrast to many other countries, there is a confusing variety of mobile contracts and providers for smartphone tariffs in Germany. Interested parties can choose from over 50 mobile phone brands with more than 200 tariffs. The prices range from a few euros to over €100 per month. 1. How much does high-speed Internet via 4G or 5G cost for my smartphone?

A relatively good 5G tariff is now available in Germany from around €8-10 per month. The best price/performance ratio is achieved with offers in the €15-30 range. The most important criteria for you are network coverage, included data volume and, of course, the price.

All of the tariffs in the comparison above are not only equipped with fast 5G Internet, but also offer a flat-rate phone plan for calls within Germany. Roaming is also included when travelling within the EU. This means you can make calls and surf the internet in Spain, for example, just as you would within Germany.

3. Which mobile phone providers are there?

In Germany, the market is divided between 4 network operators. Vodafone, O2, Deutsche Telekom and 1&1 (still a very small network). All other providers rely on one of the four as a partner and only sell their own tariffs.

4. How much Internet data volume (GB) is optimal for me?

This always depends on your usage habits. If you primarily surf the Internet on your smartphone while on the move, use navigation services, social media and messenger services, 5-15 GB of data volume (gigabytes) per month is usually sufficient. However, if you like to stream videos and music on your mobile phone while on the move, you should choose 5G tariffs with at least 30-50 GB.

5. 5G network coverage: Who offers the best network in Germany?

Deutsche Telekom currently has the best network coverage, closely followed by Vodafone and O2. This has been repeatedly shown in independent tests by magazines (e.g. connect) in recent years.

Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom also offer the fastest 5G network. With Deutsche Telekom, top speeds of over 1500 MBit/s can already be achieved in some cases with 5G. On average nationwide, however, Vodafone is slightly ahead.

7. Latest 5G smartphones are cheaper with a mobile phone contract

If you are looking for a new smartphone anyway, you can often save a lot of money by combining a new contract with a new device. All providers also offer discounted smartphones with their tariffs. FAQ: Does 5G make sense or is 4G enough?

While 5G promises increased speed and lower latency, 4G already offers solid performance for most everyday applications such as mobile surfing and video streaming. However, as most tariffs today do not cost more than LTE, the latest network is preferable.

FAQ: Can I continue to use 4G with the 5G tariffs?

Yes, of course. This is still possible without any problems. If 5G is not yet available locally or your phone does not yet support the technology, you can simply switch back to LTE.
